"Biotechnology in Medicine" aims to introduce students to the technological advances in medicine, their development, their applications and their implications. Respondents felt that any background in biology, particularly molecular biology, genetics or physiology, was helpful
The class was taught by Professors Lysaght and Hawrot. Students lauded Professor Lysaght, describing him as enthusiastic, energetic and knowledgeable. Class members, moreover, found the professor to be an excellent lecturer, noting that he was clear, organized and easy to listen to. Respondents said little about Hawrot. The professors provided notes and used visual aids effectively, which students appreciated.
The workload consisted of three non-cumulative exams, two 3-5-page papers and one 10-page paper. Readings consisted of handouts and many journal articles and was heavy at times. Students found the exams to be difficult, as they were detail-oriented. Because the exams focused on specifics, some respondents felt that they tested memorization ability. Some class members commented that they enjoyed writing the papers and found then interesting.
The majority of the class put a lot of effort into the class and spent anywhere from two to ten hours per week on average. Class members stated that Professor Lysaught, the material and the reading were motivating factors. Students found the nature of the exams to be frustrating. The third exam was given during reading period.
Class members were glad that they took the class. They found the course to be interesting and informative; students also felt they learned a lot. So, if you have an interest in biotechnology and want to take a class with an excellent professor, then look into this class.
