"Pharmacology in Today"s Science and Society" presents the science of pharmacology within the traditional framework of biochemistry and physiology. However, it"s also an interdisciplinary course that incorporates the usual study of pharmacology with an examination of the industrial, legal, and social effects of pharmacology. BI 20 and a semester of organic chemistry are the prerequisites. In addition, students highly recommended introductory biochemistry, introductory neuroscience, and physiology.

Students acknowledged that sometimes Professor Meich talked very slowly in a monotone voice. Generally though, he was friendly and well liked. Although he spoke slowly sometimes, he was always clear and well prepared in all lectures. His passion for the material was obvious and this motivated the class. While posing interesting questions himself, he encouraged everyone to ask questions and to have discussions. His teaching style was further enhanced by memorable anecdotes and excellent handouts that everyone felt were very helpful. Every student agreed that Professor Meich had exceptional knowledge of the material.

The workload consisted of an exam, a paper, a final exam, and a presentation, which was given during reading period. There was a good amount of reading which students had mixed feelings about. Although some felt the reading was far too technical and detailed, others thought that the textbook was the best they had ever had. There was a great deal to memorize and most students devoted a significant amount of effort to the class, spending a range of 6-10 hours per week. Overall they felt it was a "difficult" but interesting class.

Everyone enjoyed the class and felt that they learned a tremendous amount. For many, the course covered so many important, yet broad ideas that it opened up a whole world of knowledge. The majority of the class felt the course was very useful, applicable to the real world, and one of the best courses they"ve taken. Not many people know about "Pharmacology in Today"s Science and Society" but if you have the background, it"s worth a try.
