"Black Lavender" is a course on African-American gay and lesbian plays. Enrollment for this course is limited to 20, so the course, although a lecture course, has a personalized feel about it. There are no prerequisites for "Black Lavender," but students suggest that some prior knowledge of African-American history is helpful.
Professor Terry-Morgan, whom some of the students referred to as simply "Elmo," was noted as being very approachable and easy to meet with outside of class. He was very passionate about the subject material, which made the students want to learn more about it. He was praised for his creative class activities, such as mock trials and other group activities. Professor Terry-Morgan also asked many profound, thought-provoking questions. Unfortunately, sometimes the students found these questions a bit hard to understand. Some of the students also felt that he played favorites among class members.
Most of the students put a moderate amount of effort into this class. Play readings were assigned every day. The students were also expected to write two thesis-style papers (which were to be presented in class), and one 20- to 25-page play. They also worked in groups to write and perform another original play. Many of the students found the writing and production of the plays to be the most challenging, but also the most enjoyable, part of the course. Most of the Reading Period was dedicated to group work on the plays.
Generally, the respondents were glad that they took this course, because it required them to think creatively. One must realize that this class is devoted exclusively to the very limited genre of Afican-American homosexual plays, and must be willing to devote time and energy to studying only that subject. All of the respondents, however, felt that the course material was interesting, enjoyable, and worthwhile.
