"Models of Applied Mathematics II", a continuation of AM 35, is an introduction to differential equations. Aside from the prerequisite of "Models of Applied Math I," a good background in calculus and linear algebra helps.

Professor Dafermos received high marks from students for his knowledge and flexible teaching style. Although the material was at times very challenging, the professor was always willing to elaborate, and made sure that everyone understood. Some students were disappointed in the lack of a syllabus or grading information, as it made organization slightly more difficult.

Aside from ungraded weekly homework assignments, graded work consisted of two midterms and a final exam. Most students thought that the homework was appropriate and effective, but that the exams were very difficult. A fair amount of effort was applied to this course, because although Professor Dafermos was a good teacher, the material was difficult, requiring six or more hours per week outside of class.

On the whole, class members were satisfied with the intellectual outcome of the course. Some students noted that they learned more math in this semester than ever before. Students also believed that the knowledge gained in this course would be helpful in understanding other subjects as well, such as physics. The general consensus was that the amount of effort put in was well worthwhile.

If you have any interest in applied mathematics, than "Models of Applied Mathematics II" is a highly recommended course, as long as you are not afraid to work hard. However, as the class features an excellent professor and interesting course material, you should not be scared off of this course simply because it requires more than a little effort.
