"Statistical Analysis of Time Series," a lecture course, dealt with learning how to analyze time series of data using various methods. Aside from the required prerequisites of AM 165 and AM 166, more applied math background would be advantageous, especially proficiency in MATLAB.

Professor Bienenstock was noted to have a clear and organized teaching style, although some thought he was quite dry. In addition, some of the undergraduate students felt that the presence of graduate students made it more difficult for the professor to tailor the lectures to the class, because skill level varied to such a great extent. However, the writing of notes on the board made the lectures easier to follow.

Although there were only a few homework assignments, they were generally lengthy and relatively difficult. There was only one in-class exam at the end of the semester, but there was also a large project. Most people felt that the project was very appropriate considering the subject matter of the course. On the whole, students devoted a considerable effort to this course, averaging around six hours per week.

Students devoted great effort to this class, as they were motivated by the subject material. Most mentioned that they were glad they took this course because of the professor, and his helpful teaching style. Aside from that factor, students acknowledged an interest in either time series or MATLAB added to the intellectual benefit of this course.

If you are looking for an interesting applied mathematics course with a great professor, "Statistical Analysis of Time Series" would be a good choice. The only downside is the fast pace, but if you are a motivated student, it is reasonable.
