Delve into issues of Latin American culture and identity in "Peoples and Cultures of the Americas." As this is a lecture course, many students found that a basic background in Latin American history and culture was helpful, but not necessary. Some felt that a certain mastery of the Spanish language would have been a plus, both in doing the readings and appealing to the professor. The course focuses on gaining a better understanding of the complexities surrounding such realms as government, media, gender, race, and class in Latin America.

Professor Gutmann inspired many, but was also criticized for giving vague, unorganized lectures. He was laid-back, displaying a proud knowledge of the field that got on the nerves of some, as they sensed a bit of arrogance in his teaching methods. However, this pride did not seem to get in the way of allowing students to learn from both the professor and the readings. Overall, the professor got favorable reviews, even though his vagueness made the readings that much more critical to appreciating the course.

About two to five hours were spent on the course each week. Two midterms, one twenty-page research paper, and a group project made up the coursework, along with the readings. The survey respondents lauded the films and discussions, although they were rare. A general interest in the course was reflected in the surveys, as well as a sense of fulfillment. Most came out of the course having learned significantly from it.

If you want an intense, specialized course on the specifics of Latin American culture and identity, you may find that the value of this course relies intensely on the readings. Beyond that, lectures will offer a general breakdown of issues facing Latin Americans throughout the Americas. The rest is up to you.
