"Medical Biochemistry" is part of the first-year curriculum of the School of Medicine. It is taken by grad students, PLME students, and other undergraduates anticipating medical school as a foundation on the connections between biochemistry and clinical medicine.

The course is team-taught and is led by Professors Gruppuso and Dahlberg. Most students felt that the multitude of instructors may have compromised the organization and focus of the class, and respondents criticized many of their lecturers. Many respondents complained that Professor Dahlberg"s lecture style was insufficient, claiming that it was easier to learn alone from lecture notes and handouts. However, among this confusing mass of poorly taught lectures, Professor Gruppuso"s style stands out as an exception. Many students praised his clear lectures and useful handouts and lecture notes.

This course has Bio 28, Bio 47, and Bio 127 as listed prerequisites, although students also recommended Bio 117. Knowledge of chemistry was also stated as useful. The course requirements consisted of a midterm and a final, and various small group assignments. The amount of time spent on this course varied widely, from two to twenty hours per week. Students felt that reading the textbook was a must, as they felt that the lectures alone were not sufficient to gain full understanding of the material.

Students who took this course were for the most part taking it to fill a requirement, and many were dissatisfied with the class. Many respondents reported that they were happy to finally be done with the class. Reviewers felt that the course lacked focus, and that for the most part they were completely on their own, because lectures did not help teach the material. Respondents offered mixed advice to students considering this course. While some suggested that PLMEs take it as early as possible to reduce their course requirements for medical school, others strongly recommended waiting until medical school to take this class. As the class is a medical school requirement, no reviewers recommended this course to people not dedicated to a pre-med course of study.
