"Second Year Arabic" aims to give students a mastery of Arabic at the intermediate level. Students said that the Arabic 10-20 sequence or the equivalent background is a definite must.
Reviewers thought that Professor Sharlet continued the exemplary job done in the lower level classes. They described her as engaging and fun, and said that her insistence of speaking only Arabic was very effective in teaching them. Although some found that sometimes she spoke too quickly, they still remarked that her methods of teaching were quite successful.
Like the previous Arabic classes, students were evaluated using daily homework assignments along with tests approximately every other week. While most were content with this format, a few would have preferred more writing assignments to learn vocabulary and grammar in a more creative manner. The class was divided over their interest in the readings themselves; some liked them, others didn’t.
The course met five times per week. Outside of class, respondents spent five to ten hours per week on the homework assignments. Most were not surprised by this amount of effort because it was similar to the amount required by “First Year Arabic.”
Students said Professor Sharlet was an excellent reason to continue the study of Arabic at Brown. It requires a consistent work ethic but is both exciting and fun.
