“Advanced Written and Oral Modern Standard Arabic” functions as a continuation of the first four semesters of Arabic study at Brown. In it, class members increase their understanding of formal written and spoken Arabic. The class emphasizes functional proficiency in both. As would be expected, Arabic 10 through 40 are required to take this course.
Professor Sharlet continued to build a rapport with students through their fifth semester of Arabic. Reviewers thought that this class had less structure than previous incarnations, most likely due to the smaller enrollment. They said she was just as lively and clear as in previous classes, still moved a little fast at times, and still would benefit from employing more variety in her teaching rather than focusing on the textbook. They were also still pleased with her ability to understand the needs of the class and to accommodate them accordingly.
Outside instruction was provided primarily by the textbook, and most respondents felt that a greater range of material (such as current events) would have helped. The class was required to complete frequent homework problems and tests, a few presentations, and some papers. One person remarked that the ability to revise the papers would have been greatly appreciated.
Survey respondents spent five to seven hours per week on the course outside of class. A few said that the number of homework assignments was sometimes a little excessive.
Much like its predecessors, students said this Arabic class is taught by an enjoyable professor and is well worth taking. If the previous classes were to your liking, there is no reason to not consider shopping this one as well.
