"American Culture and Society" examined the diversity of the American experience and the complexity of the task of studying it, although the real topic was unclear to many of the students. There was no background needed for the course.

Survey respondents found the professor clear and organized, but did not like the way she ran class. They found her monotonous and not very open to student's ideas or discussion. Her lectures were at times unstructured and students felt she droned on and on. She did, however, try to cover a lot of material which the students appreciated. They also really enjoyed the field trips.

Three six-page papers, field trip write-ups and a final exam were the requirements for the course. Many respondents did not think that the assignments related well to what they were learning in class. People felt that the readings for the most part were interesting though they could get dense and long. Some readings however, were completely useless for the purposes of the course.

Students spent an average of three hours each week on this class. Most said that this matched their expectations. When a reading interested them, they would spend more time, otherwise little time was devoted to the reading. Most survey respondents said to avoid this class if at all possible, and only to take it if you are going to be an Am Civ major, because it is a requirement.
