The goal of "Race/Ethnicity, Religion and Community" is to understand religion as a factor in race relations and the ethnic experience. There were no prerequisites for this course and minimal background knowledge was required.
Students felt that the professor was very effective in his teaching style. He was interesting and knew a lot about his subject. He was easy to talk with and was good about listening to the classes' ideas. He was very sensitive and always willing to help outside of class. His feedback was very useful on written assignments and spoken comments. The only complaint was that lectures and discussion sometimes dragged, but on the whole students really liked coming to class.
Weekly, class members had to complete a two-page response paper. There was also a midterm and a final 12-15 page paper. The assignments were engaging and helped class members understand the course material. Students felt that all the readings were useful, especially the assigned novels, which were fun to read.
Five to six hours was the average amount of time spent on this class per week, although some students who spent more time thought the reading load was a little heavy. All survey respondents strongly encouraged students thinking about enrolling in this course to do so because it was definitely worthwhile.
