The goal of "Uncovering the Story of Latina/o Identity: Movement, Space and Culture" is to use narrative as a way to examine the question of Latino/a identity in modern times. There were no prerequisites for the course but an interest in Latino/a studies is a must.
Students really appreciated that the professor allowed discussion to flow freely. He was very responsive to student's needs and concerns. He emailed students constantly with feedback and ideas. His assignments were loosely structured allowing students to write about their own interests every time. He also gave out fascinating information on Latino events and news and always related current events. On an individual basis he was also very helpful. The only complaint was that discussion sometimes lagged and the students would have appreciated a little more prompting.
Students found the literary texts very useful, especially in giving them a vocabulary with which to discuss the issues. Survey respondents especially liked the memoirs, but some would have liked to read more South American texts. Class members had to write weekly responses as well as one final 20-page paper.
The average amount of time people spent on this class was 5 hours per week, which was about as much effort as they expected to put in. Some students suggested not buying the recommended books because they were not needed. All survey respondents suggested taking the class because it was enlightening with a great and helpful professor.
