The objective of "Voices Beneath the Veil" was to help class members learn more about African American theater through the study of thirty plays. Some knowledge of African American history and theater is helpful. This class is cross-registered as Theater, Speech, and Dance 111.
Professor Terry-Morgan was praised for the choice of plays studied in the class, as well as his openness on the paper topics and good feedback on them. People were also appreciative of the varied ways in which presentations were made. However nearly all students felt that he stifled discussions by asking questions with one specific answer in mind. This made respondents feel uncomfortable expressing their own opinions, especially since the class was large.
Most students enjoyed all of the plays read. About three were assigned for each week. Additionally, there was one twenty page final paper, a draft of which was handed in as the midterm. Nearly all class members greatly enjoyed the group project, which was to write and perform a play.
Around two to five hours were spent working each week outside of class time. This met most people's expectations. Students thought that the class was worthwhile, especially as an introduction to theater and/or black culture. They suggest getting very involved in the class to get the most out of it. While the plays were the highlight, the discussions were not.
