"Methods of Applied Mathematics I, II" taught by Professor Hallstrom is an alternative course to Applied Math 33. It is more mathematically rigorous, but it still covers differential equations in depth, from their applications to their solutions. MA10 is a prerequisite, and most students agreed that a strong understanding of calculus is necessary for this course. In addition, some felt that linear algebra would be helpful, but certainly not necessary.
All of the survey respondents agreed that Professor Hallstrom was a wonderful lecturer. Students felt that going to his extremely organized lectures was definitely worthwhile. In addition, the students who went to the professor's office hours felt that they were helpful as well. All in all, the professor was excellent.
Students felt that the textbook was fairly good, although not really necessary. Some felt this was so because the lectures were good enough to cover what the textbook does. The respondents who did read the book found it useful, however. As far as workload is concerned, there were two midterms, a weekly problem set, and a final exam.
Overall most students highly recommend this course, especially with Professor Hallstrom. For someone with calculus experience looking to take more math, this is an excellent class and should be looked at.
