The goal of "Shamanism: East and West" was to study the history and culture of Shamanism in different areas of the world. No background was required for the course, but respondents said that good reading skills would be helpful, as well as Intro to Anthropology.
The students really appreciated how sensitive and encouraging the professor was. She discussed important issues clearly and gave great feedback on papers and in class. The only complaint was that her lectures were sometimes disorganized and discussions sometimes went on unnecessary tangents and that she hardly led the lecture.
Students in general liked the readings and found them interesting. However, there was a lot of reading and respondents felt that they never used the reading for class. The readings were appropriate for the papers however. Class members had to complete two exams, a presentation and a final paper. People really seemed to like the presentations because it gave them exposure to a lot of material and gave the students a chance to pursue their interests. However, many were disappointed that the professor did not get involved with the presentations that often.
On average, students spent four to five hours on this class per week, mostly on reading. This matched their expectations for the most part, but they felt confused by many of the assignments. Survey respondents recommended seriously shopping this class and being patient with the professor, and if it seems like something you would like, you should take it!
