“Introductory Czech” with Professor Fidler teaches the fundamentals of the Czech language, with an emphasis on oral communication and on active engagement with Czech culture. The class is part of a two-course sequence which continues with CZ 20, and has no prerequisites beyond the willingness to learn the language.
The four respondents praised Professor Fidler’s friendliness and enthusiasm for the subject, noting that she provided good examples and excellent personal interaction. Professor Fidler was seen as very considerate about students’ needs; she taught at a reasonable pace and was flexible with deadlines and exam times. One respondent provided a simple equation: “Enthusiastic professor + small class size = good teachin’.” The only complaints received were that she went too fast and provided a huge number of handouts.
Readings came from the textbook “Czech for Foreigners,” as well as the aforementioned numerous handouts. Students also listened to folktales on audio tape. The respondents had little to say about the readings, although one said that the textbook was a bit scattered; Professor Fidler plans to replace it next year and to provide a course pack. The workload for the class was significant; there were two tests plus a final, weekly quizzes, and several other assignments including a short presentation.
Students spent from two to six hours per week on the class, which met their expectations. Generally, they recommended the course as a good introduction for anyone who wants to learn the language. For her part, Professor Fidler found the students to be highly motivated and cooperative, leading to a successful class experience.
