Examining issues of race, class, and gender, "Introduction to Ethnic Studies" seeks to provide students with an overview of the struggles of different cultures. Students learn about racialization and systems of oppression. There are no prerequisites, and no background is needed.

Students gave Professor Itzigsohn mixed reviews. Reviewers pointed out that the subject matter was quite complex, and so they praised his technique of breaking the class into small discussion groups. However, many claimed that his lectures were vague and therefore not as useful in addressing the complexity of the material. Many would have appreciated if the professor wrote on the board more often. Respondents enjoyed the class discussions the most, and said that they were the professor's strong suit.

This course required three papers and one final group project (presentation and paper) in addition to the assigned readings. Reviewers said that Professor Itzigsohn did a good job of picking interesting and thought-provoking readings. Most were content with the essays, although a few were dissatisfied by working in groups for the final project. Overall, respondents said the paper topics were decent and were motivated mainly by the readings and class discussions.

Students reported spending, on average, two to five hours per week on the class. They said that the readings could be lengthy but were pretty much as expected for an introductory class. Most stated that the readings met their initial expectations quite well. Some also said that the discussions were more interesting for those who were willing to speak up with their opinions.

If you are interested in a class that covers a broad range of discrimination theory, this class is for you. While this course doesn't provide an in-depth look at any particular culture, it will inform you about many important social issues governing your life.
