“Archaeology of Mesopotamia” is a cultural and historical survey course detailing Mesopotamian archaeological sites, political history, literature and art. The prerequisites for the course are AE 3 or equivalent background in archaeology. Most students felt that no experience was needed, although familiarity with archaeological methods as well as Professor Joukowski’s other classes would have been helpful, not to mention being very, very interested in mudbrick buildings
Professor Joukowski received almost no complaints. She was effective, enthusiastic, receptive, nice and interesting. Students felt she took their needs into account, particularly in terms of flexibility of deadlines. Students’ only criticism was that sometimes the slide lectures were ineffective, making it difficult to understand the big picture.
Students really appreciated the readings, in particular the handouts, Roux and “Plough my valves” – Inanna, whatever that means. The course required a major site report with an in class 10-15 minute presentation, one two pg. paper, one 10 pg. paper, two hour long exams, with the final one including a take home segment. Students felt the exams were fair, but that you had to memorize a lot of slides.
The hours student spent per week varied from none up to 25, depending on whether there was an exam or paper. Students felt this court met their expectations for the workload. Most students recommended this course, one even went to say that it was the best thing about their freshman year.
