Get introduced to public health in the US with “Introduction to Public Health.” Shake hands with this sucker and get to know the varied facets and general shape of public health in America. And bonus, there aren’t any perquisites.

Students felt that Professor Clark’s Power Point presentations were fantastic, but the felt that posting the Power Point slides on the web and then lecturing directly from the slides was redundant. Her zest for the subject was great, but occasionally she possible got carried away in her zeal and would go through the slides too quickly. She was considered fun, smart, organized, clear, and open to answering questions. Some survey respondents felt she expounded a little too much and this meant it took a long time to get through the material.

There was no clear consensus on which texts/readings were the most/least helpful. Suffice it to say that a fair amount of people at least liked any one of the texts/readings. There was a midterm, a final exam, and a final project. The final project was felt the highlight of the experience for many. Students reported spending three to five hours a week on work outside of class. This was slightly more time than most expected to spend on this class. Doing “lots of homework” was given as a reason for the larger than expected amount of time.

It was reported that this was very much a “freshman” course. “It is like high school” (refer back to the aforementioned lots of homework), said one student. There is a significant amount of work and a real interest in the material will help you slog through it. Even if you don’t think you’ll be interested in concentrating in Community Health, the course provides an interesting and fun overview of the public health in America.
