Do you already know Arabic, but want to improve your fluency? “Advanced Arabic” is an upper-level language course for those who wish to further their proficiency in written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic. The prerequisites for the course are the yearlong courses Arabic 10 and 20, and Arabic 30 and 40.

Students thought that Professor Christoff was a fantastic teacher. They noticed her sensitivity to their needs, her engaging teaching style, and her helpful feedback on their writing. In particular, they commented on the care she took in identifying each individual’s strengths and weaknesses and accounting for everyone’s past experiences.

Reviewers enjoyed the stories and the textbook for the course. In addition to working on the readings from the main text, students watched films, TV interviews, and news programs to learn more about Modern Arabic culture. One hour per week outside of regular class time was set aside for the discussion of any topics of interest that class members wanted to talk about. This part of the class aimed to improve students’ speaking and listening skills. Overall, the coursework consisted of biweekly journals, homework assignments, a few quizzes, and two exams.

Typically, respondents spent an average of three to five hours studying for the course outside of class. This seemed to be more than reviewers originally expected to put in. In general, students strongly recommended the course to potential students but warn them to be committed coming into the class since requires a lot of effort and persistence.
