In “Voices Beneath the Veil”, African American theater is used as a looking-glass into the history, culture, and struggles of African Americans. There are no prerequisites for the class although students report that a background in playwriting and some knowledge of African American history would be useful.
Respondents praised Professor Terry-Morgan for his effective lectures and his commitment to the process of learning. Generally, reviewers enjoyed the way the instructor challenged them to carry out class discussions amongst themselves while he occasionally gave his own input and ideas about the subject. They noted that he was usually available in office hours and were pleased by the detailed feedback that he gave on their theses.
By and large, reviewers found all the readings to be interesting and useful. Some respondents found the plays to be particularly outstanding, though nothing was mentioned which detracted from the experience. The graded work in the course involved a class presentation, a group play/performance piece, and a 15-page thesis paper. This setup received mixed reviews, depending on people’s preferences for long papers. However, the group performance piece was generally thought to be a positive experience.
The average amount of time that students spent on the course outside of class was about three to four hours per week. Class members found this amount to be very manageable. Overall, respondents felt that this was an excellent class to take, especially because you learned so much from your peers during discussions.
