“Science and Power: A Bioethical Inquiry” is an introduction to ethics related to issues concerning health. It aims at exposing students to new ways of discussing and thinking about bioethical issues and also introduces them to new approaches used to study common sense. Not only do the students learn to analyze information and data, they are also encouraged to think critically and frame questions related to ethics. This course has no prerequisites.
Students praised Professor Egilman for his excellent instruction and his knowledge in the field. This class was very different in the sense that the professor is more a facilitator of discussions than a lecturer. The students thought that the professor did his job brilliantly. They were thrilled at the idea that the professor was willing to restructure the entire class-readings based on student interest. Many students loved the course for its casual and comforting class environment.
They found all the readings very useful, and said that the extra newspaper readings helped them understand the other readings assignments well. Students were required to submit a 15- to 20-page final paper, weekly response papers and three presentations.
If you’re willing to be engaged in eye-opening discussions and thrilling presentations, while learning from a very knowledgeable professor, no one can stop you from taking this class. Many students thought that by the end of the semester, they had no doubt that they had learnt a great deal. Finally, as one student responded, “Don’t hesitate, just take it!”
