Interested in exploring HIV/AIDS from an international perspective? Want to take a class with people who have experience working in the field? Intrigued by the prospect of talking about hot, unbridled, passionate sex at 9 in the morning? If this is the case, then "AIDS in International Perspective" might be the course for you.
"Amazing", "passionate", "enthusiastic", "awesome", "kind", "compassionate" were some of the many words used to describe Professor Symonds. Not only was she very knowledgeable about the subject matter, she often offered very interesting accounts of her fieldwork in Thailand. Moreover, Symonds allowed students to run discussions every other class and invited guest speakers, that were for the most part described as "very good" at worst and "amazing" at best.
The only complaint about the course was about the midterm, which was characterized as very specific and scientific. Students found that the other course requirements (two three to five page short papers, one 15 to 20 page final paper, and two presentations) were not that difficult and extremely relevant.
Students generally agreed that the readings were worthwhile, but most found that the class itself was what really made the class memorable. Some even argued that this class was their new favorite class. Almost all students recommended taking the class, but cautioned that with an enrollment capped at 30 students, students should sign up early or speak to the professor beforehand.
