“Pathology to Power: Disability, Health and Community” is a course designed to expose the students to issues relevant to disability and people with disabilities. In addition to discussing what is being done and what remains to be done for handicapped people, it helps students become aware of the historical context and the political factors related to disability in the community. There are no prerequisites for this course.
Both professor Everhart and Becker received rave reviews from all respondents. Everyone appreciated their sense of humor and friendliness. They found both professors very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and thought that they could make time fly by their interesting lectures. The guest lecturers were also equally appreciated. Students seemed satisfied with the consideration they got from the professors on their learning needs and interests. They even mentioned that the professors were willing to answer all questions no matter how odd, personal or embarrassing they were.
All respondents were happy with the books that were assigned. Many of them found “The Spirit Catches and You Fall Down” remarkably useful. The books assigned comprised of novels, articles, and combined texts--all of them very useful and enjoyable. Respondents said that they were also very happy to find that readings were relevant to the class lectures, making them interesting and easy to understand. They were required to submit one final paper, one midterm paper, two presentations, reflection papers every week, three volunteer activities and some movie reviews.
Most of the students spent about five hours per week on this course. And they recommend this class without the slightest hesitation to anyone who is looking for a class which is fun as well as enlightening.
