The Middle East is a land of magnificent beauty and mystery. George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld are interested in what lies underneath its sandy surface. You should be too. Plus, with “Archaeology of Palestine and Syria” you incur a minimum of civilian deaths. There are no formal prerequisites for this lecture course, which enables students to understand the art, architecture and mode of life humankind led from age to age and the forces that influenced change.
Professor Joukowsky received generally warm reviews from her students. She used slide shows and other devices to construct engaging, informative, and generally enjoyable lectures. She had a laid-back attitude and was extremely (some students said almost to a fault) accommodating of questions and concerns. The class occasionally dragged, some observed, but nearly everyone had a positive experience with Professor Joukowsky.
Students were generally happy with the assigned reading, and said that almost all of it was interesting and relevant. Besides keeping up with the books, class members had to contend with two short exams, one short paper, one longer paper, an oral presentation and a final exam. Students thought that the assignments were manageable and reasonable.
Most people spent between two and four hours each week on the course, which either met or fell short of their expectations. By and large, they enjoyed the class and the material, really loved Professor Joukowsky, and encourage Brown students to take the course before graduating. It was deemed a good introduction to archaeology. So declare war . . . on your apathy towards taking this course!! I’m a very sad little man.
