The goal of “Methods of Applied Mathematics II,” the continuation of AM 35, is for students to learn advanced methods of solving differential equations, including linear algebra and Laplace Transforms. Beyond either AM 33 or AM 35, there are no other requirements to take this class – these courses give you all the background that you need.

Reviewers praised Professor Gottlieb’s teaching style, saying that she was very thorough and effective in covering the material. She spoke very clearly and methodically, making it easy to follow her lectures regardless of the difficulty of the material. She also used the board effectively in her lectures, giving sufficient examples to illustrate any new concepts. She was very receptive to all questions that were posed to her, and generally made her class a very engaging experience.

The workload consisted of two midterms, a project, and a final take home project. The professor assigned optional homework, although most students reported doing all of the homework anyway just to maintain their own understanding of the material. However, reviewers reported that the textbook was at best marginally helpful, and not always relevant to the topics that were being covered. Although students were far from enamored with the textbook, they said that the lectures more than made up for these shortcomings.

Students spent anywhere from two to five hours per week, which was roughly what they expected going into the course. This course comes highly recommended, and if you have any interest at all in the material, Professor Gottlieb will make the course a worthwhile experience.
