Have you ever wished for the opportunity to learn how to use various statistical methods, from linear regression to analysis of variances? Yes? Then sign up for “Statistical Inference II.” The stated prerequisite is AM 165 and many students said that a solid background in statistics and linear algebra was helpful. Others said that the course was manageable even if you’ve only taken AP Statistics.

Most of the reviewers agreed that in general Professor McClure had clear, organized lectures. He always seemed very organized, and made sure to pepper his lectures with useful examples. Some complained that he would occasionally assume the class knew more than it actually did and would skip vital steps in teaching certain methods. However, this was certainly offset by the large amount of time he set aside for answering questions outside of class.

The work load for this course included ten homework assignments, given weekly, as well as two midterms. These midterms were non-cumulative, and there was no final. All of these were considered very fair, and they were graded consistently. The textbook could be useful in understanding material, but many reviewers noted that it was unnecessary to do all the reading; the quality of the lectures far exceeded anything that could be accomplished by reading the textbook.

Most students spent an average of five to seven hours per week working on this class, mostly due to the weekly homework assignments. This course comes highly recommended: multiple concentrations require it to fulfill a statistics requirement, and even for non-concentrators it is a class that can prove to be very valuable.
