“Health and Society--Health Care in the United States” is a course designed to give students a general overview of the US healthcare system. Students are expected to learn to describe the different ways health care is financed in the US, to describe the evolution and structure of the heath care system, to describe how the types of regulatory apparatuses influence the quality of care, and to describe how the components interact. There are no prerequisites.

Students generally agreed that Professor Mor was an engaging and interactive lecturer, and that the PowerPoint presentations, slides, and website were all very useful. All agreed that Professor Mor really knew his stuff. Survey respondents also felt that the instructor was great at answering questions and giving feedback. Members of the class commented that the guest lecturers were “amazing.”

The course required that students take two midterms, one final, and that they write three two to three-page papers in addition to weekly one-page section papers. Of the assigned readings, members of the class agreed that the book was very useful but dry, while the material on the website was less useful but very interesting.

Students reported spending two to ten hours per week on the class—the number of hours increased drastically before major testing, and tended to be much lower when exams were not imminent. Students reported that the workload usually either met expectations or was lighter than expected. It was also generally felt that the course was rich in practical information, but that it sometimes was overly technical and a little dry. Students recommended the course for concentrators or for students with a real interest in the healthcare system.
