“Principles of Ecology” introduce students to the basic theory of ecology, including interactions within plant and animal communities. Since this is an introductory course, there are no prerequisites. Bio 20 (or placement) and Math 9 and 10 are officially recommended, but the reviewers differed as to whether these were really necessary.

Respondents generally enjoyed Professor Witman. They praised him as a clear and effective lecturer who knew his subject well. Reviewers also appreciated his excellent use of lecture aids, including PowerPoint presentations, printed lecture outlines, and overhead projections. However, a common complaint was that Professor Witman’s lectures could be rather dull; this was largely due to his monotone speaking style. Some also felt that he went too quickly. Reviewers generally felt that the professor was attentive to their individual needs and interests, and were grateful for his willingness to consider special circumstances.

Readings consisted of a textbook and a few journal articles. Most people concurred that the book was excellent and highly useful, but opinions were split on the journal articles. Many people criticized them as difficult and unnecessary, while others enjoyed them. Other requirements included three non-cumulative exams, a five-page grant proposal, a 30-minute presentation, some problem sets, and a lab report on the class’s field trip to Haffenreffer Forest. Reviewers blasted the lab report, saying it was poorly explained and took forever to complete. Worst of all, the field trip took place during Spring Weekend!

Students spent an average of one to five hours a week on the course, although a much larger time commitment was required for papers or exams. Overall, this course is recommended for anyone who likes ecology and doesn’t mind getting up at 9 AM. However, as one student put it, “Beware of LAB!!”
