“Financial Accounting” provides a basic introduction to accounting principles and financial statements. There are no prerequisites for this class, although many students commented that a basic knowledge of economics and math was necessary, and some suggested having taken Econ 11 before taking this class.

Students found Professor Sciuto and D’Andrea to be enthusiastic, accommodating, and friendly. Many praised their use of real world anecdotes to make the material more interesting, while others found that their lectures strayed too much from the topic. Most reviewers appreciated the professors’ humorous attempts to make the dry material of the class more interesting. The professors encouraged students to ask questions in class. Students also found it helpful that Professor Sciuto and D’Andrea were CPAs from actual accounting firms. While some thought the professors were too disorganized and informal and should have made more use of overheads and the blackboard, most students enjoyed the lectures and were impressed by the professors’ enthusiasm.

The coursework consisted of three multiple choice exams and weekly homework. Some thought the exams were difficult, but most agreed that the workload was fair. Students praised the textbook, but their opinion was divided over the importance of the handouts. Some found them interesting, while others thought they were boring and unimportant.

Most students spent from two to four hours a week on this course. Reviewers commented that the course was a little harder than they had initially expected it to be, but the material was useful and worth learning. Although accounting can sometimes be boring, overall students enjoyed the professors and recommended taking this class. Anyone interested in business or in learning basic accounting, should definitely consider taking Econ 71 with Professors Sciuto and D’Andrea.
