The seminar “Introduction to Qualitative Research” introduces students to the philosophical, ethical, and historical foundations of qualitative research. Professor Ulichny achieves this objective through an immersion experience in which students must write up and conduct a research project that uses primary qualitative methods. There are no prerequisites for the course, but it is usually taken by juniors and seniors.

Survey respondents indicated that they felt very comfortable with Ulichny, particularly because she was very sensitive and receptive to their needs. A few people noted that she was very flexible with scheduling, which was a big help to them. Students were often unsure of what the professor expected of them, and that her assignment instructions could oftentimes be very vague. However, students felt that Ulichny was consistently patient when students asked for clarification. She was readily available to answer questions or discuss the class members’ research projects.

Students thought the required book reading was very dull, but some grudgingly admitted that it was relevant to the subject matter. Respondents had more favorable comments about the journal articles, which they felt were even more applicable to the research they were doing. The workload consisted of four to six memos and the primary research paper.

The class spent two to three hours per week on the class itself, but up to thirty hours preparing the paper. Almost all survey respondents noted that the research paper was very difficult. Many students warned that the class takes up more time than one would expect. Respondents found this course particularly pertinent in relation to their senior thesis, but the rest of the reviewers advised, “Take it if you have to.”
