“Intermediate Calculus” continues with the principles of multivariable calculus introduced in Math 17. The prerequisite for this course is Math 10 or Math 17. Some students recommended having taken Math 17, while others suggested that AP calculus in high school was enough to get by.
Students praised Professor Petermichl for her clear and organized lectures. She provided many examples and answered questions in class. Although her lectures were monotonous at times, in general students thought she was enthusiastic and humorous. Many class members thought she went through the material too fast; although they pointed out that she had to because she had a lot of material to cover. However, students said sometimes she lost them along the way. Nonetheless, students found her to be very accessible outside of class and willing to help.
The coursework consisted of one midterm, one final exam, and weekly homework assignments. Many stated that the problem sets did not coincide well with the lectures and were returned to students too late to be of much use. Students found the homework to be challenging, but manageable. Class members disagreed over the utility of the textbook, and in general found the lecture notes to be more helpful.
Students spent between two and ten hours on this class, and said that the work got harder towards the end of the semester. For this reason, students cautioned against falling too far behind. Some found this class to be stressful and suggested taking it S/NC, while others described it as a great class and enjoyed Professor Petermichl. Many recommended only taking it if it is needed for a concentration or other classes, or if you really enjoy math. Most students agreed, however, that if you need or want to take “Intermediate Calculus”, you can’t go wrong taking it with Professor Petermichl.
