“Intermediate Calculus” covers material similar to that of Math 18, except that it is intended for those pursuing physics or engineering. Students said that Math 19 was a necessary prerequisite, as the material taught in this class was a continuation of the calculus taught in Math 19.
This course was taught by graduate student Gordana Stojanovic. Students did not find her an effective lecturer. Class members felt that she did not provide enough examples and that the ones she did provide were easier than the homework problems and were not related to real life applications. Many students said that she often seemed rushed and moved too fast. Although she encouraged questions, Gordana did not always answer them well. However, she was very accommodating and responsive to the needs of her students, and was available for help during office hours.
The course work consisted of two midterms, a final, and weekly problem sets. Some students did not think the exams fairly tested the material covered in class. Most thought the textbook was useful.
Class members spent between three and seven hours on this course and many cautioned that it gets more difficult as the semester progresses. The majority of students recommended that prospective students take it only if it is required for their concentrations; otherwise they should consider taking Math 18. Students also suggested taking it with the head professor, rather than a graduate student. In the students’ opinion, unless you are going to major in physics or engineering, this course is probably not worth taking.
