The goal of “Linear Algebra” is exactly what would be expected: to introduce students to basic linear algebra and abstract mathematical thought. While a few students said that calculus and some multivariable calculus background is helpful for this class, most agreed that it is not necessary, and that a basic knowledge of algebra is enough.
This course was taught by Allison Pacelli, a graduate student. Students found her to be cheerful, approachable, and helpful. Reviewers appreciated her teaching style, saying that she explained concepts clearly, provided good proofs and examples, and was open to questions from students. Students described Allison as enthusiastic, funny, and organized. Some students commented that she was aware of the various levels of understanding of her students, and answered questions clearly. While a few thought that she spent too much time on examples and did not make the course challenging enough, everyone found her to be very considerate and an effective instructor.
The coursework consisted of weekly homework assignments, three quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Most did not find this work difficult. The majority of students criticized the textbook, saying that it was confusing and not worth the money. Reviewers found that attending the lectures was usually enough and that the textbook was unnecessary.
Most students spent between two to seven hours per week on this class. Some said this met their expectations, while some found the class easier than expected. Overall, students encouraged others to take this class, as the material is worth learning and useful for other fields. However, reviewers cautioned that the instructor is important, because the material can be boring. If you are looking for an easy, but rewarding math class, then “Linear Algebra” may be the class for you.
