Want to see how screwed up Disney is? In “Animating Race”, the class evaluated Disney from a critical perspective to understand racial issues, gender roles and class biases. There are no formal perquisites, but some of the survey respondents felt that decent writing skills were necessary, that and a background in ethnic studies would also be helpful. The students reported that Professor Larrieux was very clear on the course's goals and expectations. The professor allowed students to lead discussions, which some class members liked. However, some others wished that she would have taught more, instead of organizing class time around focused discussions. But, all of the students found that she was always very helpful and flexible in taking into account all students' learning needs and interests.

The course required five long papers, one oral presentation, some reading, and weekly films. The students found one particular reading, Deconstructing Disney, to be really bad, but most found that the other books and the course packet were interesting. Some of the reviewers also found that the writing topics were interesting, but felt that the workload was a little too heavy.

Students spent anywhere between five and ten hours per week on this course. Some of the respondents felt there was too much reading. However, the overall feeling in the class was that if you are interested in the politics of Disney, and will not be offended by what other people say about it, enroll. However because it is an Am Civ seminar, it may not be offered again.
