Urbanism traditionally receives a sociological or political analysis in the modern context. However, historians constantly remind us that comparison with earlier periods provides a better understanding of a subject. If you are seeking to understand urbanism in this comparative context, “Urbanism in the Archaeological Record” is the class for you. The course sought to define and trace the development of urbanism through analysis of the archeological record from the middle ages to the present. To get into this course, students need a previous course in the department, such that the student has archeological experience.
Professor Martha Joukowsky presented the material through presentations and lectures, accompanied by discussion. Class members found her personable and thought she accounted well for student needs and interests. The small class size was appreciated. Although this likely had an effect on the success of Joukowsky’s method, students definitely found her leadership of discussions and handling of the student presentations exemplary and helpful to their study.
Joukowsky assigned many readings, of most of which the students found effective. In particular, “City in History” received a good review. One respondent noted that Joukowsky said she would change the readings students did not find useful, upholding reviewers’ perception of Joukowsky’s commitment to student learning needs. The class required that students make two presentations on class readings, and compose and present a paper of ten to fifteen pages.
Students spent between three and five hours on this course outside of assigned class meetings. This number increased for some when due dates were coming up. This met respondents’ expectations. Few people offered general comments on the class. Those that did recommended that students seeking a fun class should enroll, and read the material.
