"Introduction to Africana Studies" is an introduction, in lecture format, to the academic study of the African experience in America. This class gives an overview of intellectual movements and the collective history of African Americans from before slavery to the present. As an introductory class, there were no prerequisites. Knowledge of American history was helpful.

The majority of students agreed that Professor Henry was a great, dynamic lecturer. Lectures were clear, informative and well-organized. Some students thought the lectures could be repetitive and that class discussion needed improvement. A number of respondents wished Professor Henry had been able to better facilitate a comfortable environment where students could participate in discussions more easily. Most people agreed that Professor Henry was flexible, taking the class' needs and interests into consideration. A few thought that the class itself was not responsive enough.

Respondents enjoyed the reading in general. In particular, students liked Black Power, Ain't I a Woman and works by Frederick Douglass. The reading was also useful for completing the take-home exam. However, some students found the course packet readings dense and difficult. There was a take-home midterm and a final paper, which both consisted of two 6 page essays.

People spent an average of 3 hours doing the class readings. More time was needed to write the midterm and final essays, but in general, the workload was expected and manageable. Many students recommend taking this course because the material is thought-provoking and relevant to everyone. The majority of students recommend Professor Henry as a humorous and engaging professor with a lot of knowledge to share.
