“Introduction to Archaeology” attempts to make students aware of archaeology and its contributions to the study of past human history. Students study the past from fossil records to written accounts. In this class, students learn various basic skills and techniques of archaeology and various applications. There are no prerequisites for this course, but some feel that some background knowledge would be helpful.

The reviewers praised Professor Gould’s lectures highly. Some students felt that he was too prone to going off on tangents or talking about his specialty of maritime archaeology for an introductory course, but most found that this tendency made the lectures more accessible and entertaining. But some really enjoyed his personal stories and even felt that it made the class more engaging for students. They described the lectures as “funny” and “conversational.” Almost all reviewers said that their needs and interests were well taken care of.

There were several required readings throughout the semester. Some of these books were “amazing”. Some found others painful to get through. There were two exams for this course. One exam was a midterm while at the end of the term there was a final and a paper. Many felt that having a final paper and an exam was too much.

The average amount of time spent by reviewers on out-of-class work was two to four hours per week, which was about what the students expected from the course. They recommend it as an interesting and very enjoyable introduction to all things archaeological.
