“Pathology to Power: Disability, Health, and Community” is a seminar that addresses the societal treatment of disability. Students explore the lives of those living with physical, cognitive, developmental, and other disabilities, and are particularly asked to contemplate the issues facing disabled people.

Students thought that Professors Becker and Everhart were both “very effective at facilitating discussions”, “nailed the essential issues of disability” and “sparked motivation and further thought”. Professor Everhart, in particular, was “accessible, accommodating, and knowledgeable”, “amazing” in the words of one student. Professor Becker differed from Professor Everhart in his more scientific approach to the issues being discussed. Said one student, “With him, everything had to fit into a box”.

Survey respondents indicated that they were required to participate in weekly discussions on reading, and complete one midterm literature review and one final research paper and presentation. In addition, they were asked to complete three movie reviews, and keep a journal detailing their three volunteer experiences. Most students enjoyed the reading for the course, with the exception of perhaps the Disabilities Services Reader.

Students spent an average of five to seven hours per week completing assignments for the course. Survey respondents wholeheartedly recommended the course to all students, not just those concentrating in Community Health. Says one student: “It’s an eye-opening analysis of life with disability”. Another student agrees: “It will open your mind and definitely add to your Brown experience.” Indeed, amazing professors and thought-provoking discussion seem to be what make “Pathology to Power” a course worth looking into.
