“Fieldwork in Urban Archaeology and Historical Preservation” is a seminar which explores different techniques of historical preservation in the architectural field. There is no official prerequisite; however, several students felt that it would be helpful to have some knowledge of urban studies and/or architecture before taking the class.

Professor Greenwood divided his class into lecture, discussion of assigned readings, and fieldtrips. Students thought that the fieldtrips around Providence enriched the course by giving them tangible examples of the course material. The class members had varying opinions of the lectures; some felt that the quality of the lectures depended on the class, that some were yawn worthy while other lectures were more engaging. Other students felt the lectures were an effective way of introducing preservation techniques, and primed them for the discussions. In addition to Professor Greenwood’s lectures, there were guest lecturers which offered students additional perspectives on historical preservation.

Students were assigned a short paper/project around mid-semester, and a longer, self-designated research project by the end of the class. Readings for Urban Studies 101 were required; however, a large number of students admitted that they did not read all of them. A few really enjoyed the reading list, but most felt that they could get by without them, or that they were not relevant to the two written assignments.

Most students committed about four hours a week to this class. Before the project deadlines, however, the number of hours spent increased dramatically. Students recommended this class to those who are already interested in the subject matter, or who want to experience a class that is more than just lecture and gets you out into the community. However, some students warned that if you are interested in the broad field of American preservation, this class may seem a little too focused on Providence, RI.
