"Domestic Violence Awareness Month”

On any given day in the state of Rhode Island, 46 people call a domestic violence hotline, 59 women and children spend the night in a domestic violence shelter and 28 people seek community based domestic violence services. This type assault is called domestic violence and it happens more than anyone can imagine. Domestic Violence is defined as a pattern of assault and coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks that adults or adolescents use against their intimate partners in order to maintain power and control in the relationship. It is so prevalent that over 10,000 unduplicated victims of abuse throughout the state of Rhode Island were treated in the year 2005.

The Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence (RICADV) was formed in 1979, in response to help victims and their families affected by domestic violence.  It is an organization dedicated to ending this crime.  RICADV’s mission since its beginning has always been ‘to support and enhance the work of the member agencies and to provide leadership on issues of domestic violence’. These member agencies are located throughout the state of Rhode Island. They provide a strong network of emergency and support services to families affected by domestic violence in Rhode Island. Services provided include emergency shelter, 24-crisis intervention, support groups, children’s programs, court advocacy, counseling, and prevention through education and public awareness.

Women are the victims of intimate violence and homicide significantly more often than men. 15 million women are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in United States. There are many signs that a partner may be abusive.  Jealousy and controlling behavior is just some of the signs that a partner may be abusive.  Domestic Violence is unacceptable; it has no color line and does not discriminate.
