"Our Body and The Media”

Vogue. Instyle. Harper’s Bazaar. People. These 4 magazines typically give advice to women all over the world ranging from fashion, relationships and in recent years, diets and exercising tips. Within the last 15 years, the dieting and exercising craze has essentially affected the images that women see of themselves every day. These images have contributed to the root of the problems behind eating disorders and sometimes depression found in females. These same images give impossible standards of the female body. These images force the readers to catch up.
In recent years, Dove has created “The Campaign for Beauty” in response to this impossible standard of the female body. This campaign is “a global effort that is intended to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition and discussion of beauty”. According to Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty, “more than two-thirds of women globally participated in a recent worldwide study.  Sadly, the impact is that only 13% of women are very satisfied with their body weight and shapes, only 2% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful, and more than half of women say their bodies disgust them”. These numbers are astounding and sad. Almost all of the females who took the global survey DO NOT like what they see in the mirror.
This advertising campaign is one of the most innovative that anyone has ever seen. It was a body challenge to the media outlets that fuel this impossible standard of beauty. Dove promotes what “real women” look like. This is the most positive image a major corporation has displayed in years. The campaign itself has taken on a life of its own. Dove offers training programs and workshop training for self esteem.
The Lovely Ladies of the Lambda Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated understand these issues. March is HerStory month!! HerStory month is a month long celebration of women and the issues that affect them.  One program that is very important to us is the Body Project, which focuses on the issues of how females see themselves in the mirror. Please feel free to join us!!!!

My Emotions for Haiti

I cry. I cry. I cry.
Everyday I cry for my
People
Everyday I pray for my
People
I cry. I pray. I hope.
I hope for peace. I hope
For love. I hope for
Stability.
I hope for growth and
Most importantly I have
Hope for them
The restaveks, the poor,
The children, the sick,
And the dying.
Everyday I cry for my
People.
I cry. I cry. I cry.
