The College Experience

Learning in the Classroom and Beyond…

As yet another school year begins, the Ladies of the Lambda Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. would like to welcome everyone back to Providence with wishes for a good year academically, socially, and spiritually.

For entering freshmen, the college experience is often a shock because, on one hand, you will probably have more time than you did when you were in high school, but on the other hand, it becomes very difficult to manage your time effectively. It is all to easy to become caught up in partying, hanging out with your friends, or even just sleeping. Or you may swing to another extreme by living in the school library or computer lab or hiding in your room not having any kind of social life whatsoever.

While your primary focus should be studying and maintaining good grades, also remember that college life should be a well-rounded experience by learning not only in the classroom, but through your social interactions and your extracurricular activities.

There are many resources available to students who need to learn time management skills or how to study more effectively. By using these, you will be better able to maintain a balance between school and other activities while having some free time for yourself.

So, do not hesitate to join a student group, do a service project, or show school spirit in some sort of way. Your college experience will be all the more better for it.

Scholarship and Service

Keeping Balance and Focus Throughout the School Year

While many of us may have been required to do community service while in high school, we often put our commitment to service on the back burner when we get to college. Most colleges in Providence have student groups, which work in conjunction with other service organizations.

As a public service sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority prides on its numerous contributions to others on a national and local level. The Lambda Iota chapter sponsors a variety of service projects. For more information or to get involved, please contact Lauren Clark at (401) 274-8487 or Claudine Compas at (401) 274-8557.

Sorors of the Month

By Melika Clarke, Spring 2001

Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY.  She is undeniably one of the most outstanding and outstanding and outspoken leaders of our time. Soror Chisholm is the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress, serving the 12th Congressional District of Brooklyn of Brooklyn from 1968 until 1982. In 1972, she made another unprecedented move as the first black woman to bid for the Presidential nomination of the Democratic Party. Soror Chisholm is also the founder and chair of the National Political Congress of Black Women. An uncompromising woman who always stood firm in fighting for civil rights and gender equality, The title of Soror Chisholm’s autobiography Unbought and Unbiased is a reflection of her life.

Patricia Roberts Harris, like Soror Chisholm, has also achieved a series of “first”. After graduating from Howard University in 1970, Soror Harris joined a law firm and shortly afterwards was appointed a top position with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). She became the first black woman to serve as director of a major company in the United States. Subsequently, Soror Harris served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Jimmy Carter, becoming the first black woman U.S ambassador. She was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to travel to Luxembourg in 1965.
