Founded in the Spring of 1979, La Federación De Estudiantes Puertorriqueños (FEP) is a student organization which was created to address the needs and issues facing both mainland and island-born Puerto Rican students at Brown University. FEP was created by Puerto Rican students dissatisfied with the Latin American Students Organization's (LASO) attempts to meet their needs or address issues affecting Puerto Rican students at Brown. FEP's creation was sparked by the need to provide support for, and increase the retention rate of, Puerto Rican students who attend Brown.

Since 1979, the Puerto Rican community at Brown has almost tripled and FEP has worked diligently to increase the Brown communitys' awareness of the Puerto Rican culture and to serve the needs of Puerto Rican students. In 1980, FEP decided to sponsor a one day celebration of the Puerto Rican culture and heritage. This idea was so successful and well-received that it has since become tradition, which has been extended to a week-long celebration, Puerto Rican Cultural Week. An annual event at Brown, Puerto Rican Cultural Week is also one of FEP's largest commitments.

Latino History Month is the second biggest commitment FEP has during the academic year. Traditionally held in April, Latino History Month is a combined effort of the many Latino groups at Brown. Through Latino History Month, FEP is able to bring focus to issues affecting Puerto Rican students, and to share the rich Puerto Rican heritage and culture. As part of the newly formed Latino Executive Board, FEP contributes it's ideas with the rest of the Brown Latino community and is a major contributor to the organizing and coordinating process for Latino History Month. In addition, many other student organizations often play a key role in Puerto Rican Cultural Week by cosponsoring events with FEP or other student groups.

In addition to having members on the Latino Executive Board, FEP also has two representatives in the admissions office. Each year one senior is elected to represent FEP on the Minority Review Committee and a first-year is also elected to serve as one of the Co-coordinators of Third World Weekend.
