Job Descriptions

President

The President’s main responsibility is to advocate for graduate students in the University and the greater Providence community contexts. As a representative of the Brown graduate community, the President meets regularly with Graduate School Administration, sits on University Committees, and collaborates with other student organizations to improve the situation of graduate students. The President also gauges the needs of graduate students and shapes the GSC into a more effective vehicle for meeting those needs. Finally, the President communicates important information to the graduate community and maintains an open line of communication between graduate students and the GSC.

Vice President, Administration

The Vice President of Administration’s duties are to work alongside the President and act on behalf of the GSC in his or her absence. He or she is also responsible for overseeing graduate student representation on University Committees and is the primary contact for the GSC students Group. The Vice President of Administration also heads the selection processes for GSC awards and honors.

Master’s Advocate

As the liaison between the GSC and the master’s programs of Brown University, the Master’s Advocate helps bridge the worlds of master’s students and PhD students. His or her main duty is to add the perspectives of master’s students to the GSC. This work primarily involves gathering and assessing the opinions of master’s students on graduate student issues and sharing the results at GSC meetings and at meetings with the Administration.

Treasurer

All GSC money matters land on the desk of the Treasurer, whose main responsibilities are managing the GSC’s finances and processes funding requests. Managing the finances mainly involves writing up the budget and keeping track of GSC spending. Processing funding requests involves taking requests for money from the GSC in the form of departmental rebates, grant funding, event funding, and conference funding. The Treasure communicates all funding requests to President.

Secretary

As the official record keeper, the Secretary documents the activities of the GSC. The Secretary’s primary responsibilities are reporting on the GSC monthly meetings and keeping track of GSC membership. Most meeting documentation involves bringing the agenda, keeping track of attendance, updating the GSC Events Calendar, and taking the minutes. Most membership documentation involves updating the list of departmental representatives and the emergency student contacts. The Secretary works with the Technology Officer to ensure that information on the website is up to date.

Vice Presidents, Social

The Vice Presidents of Social Life plan social events for graduate students. This work primarily entails designing GSC events, from scheduling the dates and reserving space for graduate student socials to staffing the events and organizing post-event cleanup. Usually, the Social Vice Presidents organize 1-2 events per month, totaling of 4-7 per semester. They also oversee the graduate lounge, which involves processing requests to use the graduate lounge, updating the GSC Grad Lounge Calendar, and working with facilities management or private contractors on maintaining and improving the state of the lounge. The Vice Presidents work with the Technology Officer to advertise grad student socials on the GSC webpage.

Technology Officer

The tech officer’s main job is maintaining the mailing lists and website. Most list maintenance involves approving emails sent to GSNOTICE and approving new members for the lists. Most website maintenance involves posting new social events to the main page, as well as updating the lists of GSC representatives, recognized student groups, and external committee representatives as they change, which is relatively infrequently. The Tech Officer job involves relatively little responsibility but has the side benefit of also being a GSC officer position. This means greater involvement in the GSC, participation in officer meetings and meetings with the deans, and a greater understanding of the issues that face grad students.
