Graduate Student Council of Brown University

The Graduate Student Council (GSC) is the official political and social body for the approximately 1,700 graduate students here at Brown University. The GSC is made up of representatives from each department and officers elected from the graduate student population by the representatives. Our primary aims are to foster a sense of community among graduate students across departments and to offer a voice for that community within the University and the Providence area.

Within the community of graduate students, we

• Distribute funding from student activities fees to support graduate student initiatives and departmental events.
• Coordinate social events, such as Friday social hours, St. Patrick's Semi-Formal, and weekly dance lessons.
• Organize Fall Orientation for new graduate students.
• Oversee the Graduate Student Lounge.
• Maintain the GSC website.
• Recognize official graduate student groups.
• Serve as a forum for graduate students to express and act upon their concerns.

Between graduate students and the University, we

• Represent and communicate the interests of the graduate community to the administration.
• Appoint graduate student representatives to serve on University-wide committees, such as the University Community Council, University Resources Committee, and the University Creative Arts Council.
• Inform students about developments at the University that will impact the graduate community.

Between graduate students and the greater Providence community, we

• Publish the Brown Book (available on-line), which gives students better access to goods and services available in Providence.
• Serve as the official liaison and facilitate communication of graduate student interests.
• Coordinate community service events where graduate students can offer their time and talent to support the Providence community.

We hold monthly meetings the first Wednesday of each month at 7-9pm in the Graduate Student Lounge. As always, we provide pizza and beverages. Information about upcoming events appears on the GSC calendar as well as on the calendar of the Graduate School.
