Minutes Review
Minutes from the December 1, 2004 meeting were passed for review.

Guest Speaker
Beth Murphy of Financial Aid discussed various aspects of graduate student
loans.  For information, visit the Financial Aid website @

Executive Reports
   1) Technology Officer: the GSC website is now updated with the Calendar
      highlighting upcoming events.  Log on to
      http://www.brown.edu/Students/GSC/ .
   2) Secretary:  graduate students are encouraged to utilize the resources
      and attend workshops at the Sheridan Center of Teaching.  Plus,
      nominations are needed for the "Best Teacher" award offered by the
      Center.  For more info:

   3) VP, Administration:  changes have occurred in several external
      committees, with a few old committees ending and new ones forming.  A
      list will be distributed to the representatives regarding vacancies in
      committees.  Nominations for the Wilson Du Bois Award in April are now
      being accepted.  Also, consider nominations for a graduate speaker for
      Commencement in the spring.  For questions, contact: Ki-

   4) Treasurer:  the Council is continually accepting requests for
      departmental rebates.  The GSC now has a mailbox # 1952.
   5) President:  the GSC board hopes to achieve the following goals:
        a. Streamlining meetings through orderly procedures at general
           meetings.
        b. Recognizing graduate student groups.
        c. Strengthening relationships between the GSC and the University
        d. Revising the GSC Constitution, by the creation of (2) committees
           charged for this task:
              i. Constitution Revision Committee - contact:

Funding Requests
The GSC has voted to grant $400 towards the Chinese New Year's celebration
occurring on Sunday, February 13, 2005.  Graduate students have free
admission to this event.
Report: VP, Social
The entire list of social events for this semester can be found on the
Calendar at the GSC website.  A new ticketing system will be enforced
beginning at the Beer Social this Friday, February 04, 2005:  each person
will receive (2) tickets good towards (2) bottles of liquor.  For more

External Committee Reports
   1) University Community Council:  Each department representative is asked
      to survey their respective departments on the most important issues
      that the students want to be brought before the University.  Please
      report your findings to Robin McGill, Sarah Dawson, or Matthew Lease
      (Matthew_Lease@brown.edu).

9pm.
