GSC General Meeting Minutes: November 2, 2005 Minutes Review: October meeting minutes were passed. Speakers: Valerie Wilson, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, discussed the various services provided by the Grad School, such as supporting conference travels. Two major aims for the Grad School this year is to create more of a sense of community among the grad population, in addition to expanding opportunities for professional development, of which arose the new "Academy in Context" series. Furthermore, Dean Wilson's professional interests center about the bio-medicine programs here at Brown. Ted Wheeler, Director of Health Services, and Jeanne Hebert, Director of Insurance & Risk, helped to clarify the services of their respective offices. They both encourage students to visit both offices? websites for further information about services. David Beckoff and Kate Brandt of UCS asked for collaboration with GSC in examining the possibility of standardization of TA grading policies --- the majority vote was against such collaboration. Executive Reports: President: nominations for GSC office continue through the December meeting. The next lecture in the "Academy in Context" series will be on November 17. Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts are in the works. Treasurer: a majority vote for the raising of the student activities fee to $40/year. A proposal will be made to the Grad School. Group Recognition: Ethnic Studies Graduate Research Group has been recognized as an official student group. Funding Requests: The Council approved a request of $400 for the Anthropology, Art, Activism lecture series. An approval of $50 was also granted for "Night of Romance Language Poetry" to be held on November 17. GSC Election Nominations: Call for nominations for the following offices (President, VP Administration, VP Social, Treasurer, Secretary, and Technology Officer). External Committee Vacancies: One vacancy remains for the Public Safety Oversight Committee. NOTE: The next GSC general meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at 7pm at the Graduate Student Lounge --- elections will be held for the new Board!
