Speaker: Brenda Allen, Associate Provost & Director of Institutional Diversity In regards to the new University bias policy, an ad hoc committee has been reviewing current policies on the process of bias/discrimination allegations and resolution. Executive Reports: President: Thank you to all the participants in the process of revising the Constitution. Social: All the Socials at the GCB have gone very well. The last remaining Social will be held at the Graduate Lounge. Upcoming events: May 13 - Spring BBQ May 27 - Champagne Toast @ Graduate Lounge External Committee Reports: Chief of Police Search Committee Mark Porter (from UMass, Dartmouth) has been selected as the new Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety for the University. His term has begun since early April. Health Insurance Committee Changes have been made regarding the cost of health insurance—the cost has been raised by 15% across the board. For concerns or issues, contact: James_Palardy@brown.edu. Vacancy: University Resource Committee We still need 1-3 graduate student representation. The Committee, led by Provost Robert Zimmer, meets every Monday afternoons from 3pm-5pm. A suggestion was made to have the three representatives split up the responsibilities. Funding Requests: 2005 History of Art & Architecture/Comp. Lit Grad Symposium The GSC granted their request for $357 (plus change). Classics Dept. Conference "Sticks & Stones, Speeches & Songs" The GSC granted their request for $400. Graduate Speaker Candidacy; Candidate: (Luk Chong Yeung), a doctorate recipient in Physics. Decision: we tabled the vote until the audition to be held on April 20. *Note: (Luk Chong Yeung) was selected as the Graduate Speaker for Commencement after the audition, and her speech is titled, "Our Miracle Year." *A motion was passed to extend the meeting past 9pm. Wilson-Deblois Award: Nominations: Dean Carla Hansen Laura Hess & Janet Rankin (Associate Directors of the Sheridan Center) *Laura Hess & Janet Rankin will be the recipients of the Wilson-Dubois Award by a vote of 7 to 6. GSC Constitution vote: The Constitution passed by a unanimous vote. The second necessary vote will be held at the May 4 GSC general meeting for it to be in effect. The by-laws were passed out to all representatives to be voted on at the May 4 meeting as well. *Next GSC general meeting will be on May 4, 2005, 7pm-9pm @ GSL.
