GSC General Meeting Minutes: October 6, 2005 President - Robin McGill VP, Administration - Ki-O Kim VP, Social - Sarah Dawson Treasurer - Matthew Hirsch Secretary - Dany Chan Technology Officer - Guillaume Marceau I. Minutes from September 7th meeting were passed. II. Speakers: 1) Belinda Johnson, Director of Psychological Services Offices are located on the second floor of Rhode Island Hall. The following services are free for Brown grad students: crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy, referral service, workshops, and consultation services. New this year, there is now a full-time psychiatrist. 2) Miryana Vassileva, Career Development An advisory committee exists to examine the needs of graduate programs, and feedback is always welcome. A "Career Conference" is upcoming in April where Brown Grad alums will be invited to talk about their experiences after the doctorate. Workshops for October include one for CVs, resumes, etc. Also, there is a "self-assessment" workshop to help with non-academic job searches. Call for advanced grad students to talk about their experiences in an upcoming panel, "Getting What You Came For." III. Officers' Reports: 1) President "Academy in Context" series started on Wednesday, October 5. The next dinner/seminar will be on November 17, 2005, titled, "Looking for Truth in History and Science." GSC will donate $1000 to Brown's Katrina relief efforts, and discussion is under way to decide how and where the money will go. It has been voted to discontinue talks with USC regarding issues of standardizing expectations in TAships. GSC officer elections will be held in December. Nominations are due at the November meeting. 2) VP, Social Halloween Part on Friday, October 28. New this year--prizes will be given for best costumes (male, female, group). Call for volunteers for the Decorating Committee. 3) Secretary In regards to questions of the number of reps allowed per department-- each department is allowed (1) rep for every (40) students in the department. 4) Technology Officer Efforts have been made to reduce spam in the GSBB. IV. Funding Requests: Barus & Holley Basketballers' request for $400 was denied. V. External Committee Report: Grad Council--Alyssa Mocharnuk: The Council has approved, and denied, new courses for Ph.D and Masters programs. Dean Sheila Bonde has emphasized the notion of the "grad curriculum." One of the biggest discussions this year will be issues regarding the "pay as you go" method for Masters programs. VII. Group Recognitions: LGBTQA is recognized as a student group. Turkish Student Association is recognized as a student group. VIII. Vacancies--External Committees: a. Grad Council: William Tatum is the new rep. b. University Community Council: James Gagnon his the new rep. c. University Disciplinary Council: Joe Bush is the new rep. d. The following committees still have vacancies: College Curriculum Council Public Safety Oversight Committee Officer Conduct Review Board Next GSC General Meeting will be on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at 7pm.
